The proliferation of healthcare data, especially generated by the mobile health technology (mobile medical devices, mobile apps, home care, etc.) requires new ways of integrating them together to be useful for patients, physicians, researchers, and public health officers. There is a need for a mHealth platform and architecture that will breakdown the silos of apps and data.

mHealth platforms are the bridge between the health and the technology that not only enable collaboration but to provide a holistic view of patient’s health to improve treatment outcome. In this session, speakers will explore two different views of their efforts and experiences in developing mHealth platforms, and their approaches to achieve healthcare data sharing and collaborations

Speaker Biographies

Dr. Ida Sim, Professor of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco; Co-Director of Biomedical Informatics, UCSF Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, and Co-Founder Open mHealth.

Professor Sim presentation topics and synopsis.

Open mHealth: An open architecture to maximize the innovation and effectiveness of mobile health

Open mHealth is a new non-profit dedicated to building an open software architecture for mobile health (mHealth) to improve individual and population health. Mobile health apps and sensors are currently being built independently, with little data sharing. Yet each person's health is multi-dimensional and evolving, and a full picture of health will require integrating, processing, and visualizing data from multiple apps and data sources. In this talk, Dr. Ida Sim will describe the Open mHealth vision and approach, with illustrative example projects on Type I diabetes management and the treatment of chronic pain. Open mHealth is building partnerships with non-profit and commercial partners across the mHealth sector nationally and globally.

Dr. Erica Weirich, Director, Global Health Research Foundation; Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine

Dr. Erica Weirich is the founder and director of Global Health Research Foundation (GHRF), a practicing physician in Los Altos, CA, and Adjunct Professor of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.  In the mobile health arena, GHRF has integrated mobile applications into health and environment data repository systems to ensure rapid access to "outcomes" for programs in Uganda, Bhutan, Tanzania and even in Fresno, California.  GHRF assists programs in utilizing appropriate technology to ensure problem identification, disease reduction, resource targeting and efficiency, generating platforms for true "tests of change" (reduction in morbidity/mortality, etc).   Focused on health and eco-health improvement in resource-poor areas, GHRF is orienting and integrating technology to ensure that functioning solutions are interoperable, sustainable, scalable, and transferable.

Dr. Weirich earned a Masters in International Development Policy along with her Medical Degree at Stanford University.  In addition to teaching medicine, Dr. Weirich teaches Stanford Engineering students through the "Engineering for Good" program developed and directed by Dr. My T. Le, who also serves as Engineering Director for Global Health Research Foundation.
