Clean Tech: Moving Traditional Economies forward

With advances in this sector from both the US and China, the enthusiasm for cleaner technologies has grown at a rapid pace though these feelings are mixed with caution against hype. Is clean tech really necessary to continue economic growth and stability? What needs to be done to stay at the forefront of these technologies? What role does policy play in the success of "clean" businesses? Where are the real opportunities? What are the lessons learned? In this discussion our clean tech experts will share their hands-on experiences and inspirational thoughts with entrepreneurs, investors and executives alike.


  Liam Li, Sr. Business Director, BYD America Corporation

Mr. Li has over 16 years of various industry experiences in the US and China. Started as a financial analyst in the health care industry in US, Mr. Li expanded his responsibility gradually from finance, analytics to operations, regulation and then to overall business profitability. Mr. Li obtained his MBA from the University Of Chicago Booth School Of Business and is an active CPA in the US.



  Steve Westly, Founder, Westly Group

Prior to founding The Westly Group, Steve Westly served as the Controller and Chief Fiscal Officer of the state of California - the world's eighth largest economy. During his four-year term, Mr. Westly spearheaded tax programs that helped close the State's budget deficit and also led an effort to commit more than $1 billion to clean technology investments. In the 2008 election cycle Mr. Westly served as a state co-chair and a National Finance Committee member of the Obama for America campaign. 



  Edward West, Founder/President, Mission Motors

Edward is the Founder and President of Mission Motors, manufacturer of the world's fastest production electric motorcycles. Mission Motors began as Edward’s Capstone project during his final semester at Presidio. In addition to his work with Mission Motors, Edward consults with start-up founders and speaks on the process of creating businesses. His background consists of engineering, and designing complex robotic systems and consumer products. 


  Johnnie M. Stoker, President & CEO, K2 Energy Solutions, Inc.

Johnnie founded K2 in 2006, having had over 20 years experience in materials, R&D, product development, process development, sales & marketing, engineering design and executive management. He gained expertise through various technical and management positions at JR Simplot Company, Vista Chemical Company, Engelhard Corporation and Valence Technology. Most recently, as VP of operations for Valence Technology, he set up and managed the company’s operations in China.

  Edith Yeung, Founder, BizTechDay

Edith is a host of CBS 5 Startup Profile, a sought-after speaker, and the Founder of BizTechDay. She delivered many content rich, high-energy and memorable talks in US, Asia and Europe and leads San Francisco Entrepreneur Meetup Group with over 3000 members. Edith Yeung has been featured on CBS, CNN, and other Management Magazines. A member of the San Francisco Small Business Week and UC Berkeley Entrepreneurship Certificate Program Advisory Board.


  Vish Mishra , President, TiE

Vish Mishra is a venture capitalist with Clearstone Venture Partners, and has over 30 years of leadership and management experience in the technology industry. He has served as a founder of Telera and co‐founder of Excelan, generating over $1B in revenues. Vish is the president of TiE Silicon Valley. Vish serves as an advisor to Silicon Valley Center for Entrepreneurship at College of Business, San Jose State University.



  Courtney McColgan , Co-founder, Wokai

Courtney McColgan is the cofounder of Wokai, a person-to-person microlending platform for China. To date, Wokai has assisted 400+ borrowers, attracted 6,500+ contributors, and distributed $350,000+ in loan capital. Courtney was previously an analyst at Draper Fisher Jurvetson where she focused on clean technology and China-related investments. Prior to joining DFJ, Courtney worked as an investment banking analyst at Morgan Stanley in Beijing and China.


  Claire Chang, President, ABL-SF

Claire Chang is the president of ABL-SF, and has served on the Board since 2003. Claire co-founded executive training program, You are the CEO of you!. She is currently Founder/Managing Director of a consulting firm ClaireSays Inc. that provides marketing, business/community development, product marketing and launch, social media strategy and PR/AR services.Claire most recently served as a Chief Community Officer at an early stage internet start-up in SF.


  Claire Chang, Organizer, Geeks on a Plane

Christine Lu is the founder of The China Business Network and Cilantro Media, as well as the organizer of the Geeks on a Plane. By meeting face-to-face without the direct goal of market entry provides a neutral environment on even ground and helps people understand each other’s cultures better. After college, Christine moved to Shanghai in 1999, and was a clothing designer and marketing manager for her family’s clothing retail business.
